I love how impressive augmented reality works and looks, the perfect app-type to show-off what our babies are capable of. This app, called Wikitude Drive, is a turn-by-turn Navigator with AR goodies. In the clip you see it running on a HTC Magic, but it has been submitted to the AppStore. I can’t wait to give it a ride and to tell you all about it…
Thanks to our loved blog Engadget we have news that FCC published the details of the famous TomTom car kit everybody is waiting for, or at least all the ones that naively thought that the gps chip in the iPhone could do on its own (people like me).
This pure marvel of “dockology” features bluetooth for handsfree calling and a sirfstar gps chip to boost the navigation experience. Not to forget that this mount also allows to have your phone charging while being used. Personally think this is a must have for anyone that already bought TomTom for its iPhone, or anyone that bought any other navigation software, a this kit is meant to be compatible with other software too. Can’t wait!
The day TomTom made it to the AppStore I finally said to myself:”This is the day you were waiting since you even thought about getting an iPhone!”.
I’m currently on holiday, in Spain, having a great time. Thought I could enjoy it even more by installing TomTom on my phone. Thanks to my friend Nadie’s wifi access, downloaded the app on my iPhone.
The moment we got in a car, switched on TomTom and patiently waited for the gps to fix. Nothing, big disappointment. Huge one. Waited over 10 minutes with only a “Poor signal” message appearing at the end. Ok, I’m abroad and data roaming is off. So, when back home, leaned out from the window, where my phone was still catching wifi and there… Magically TomTom managed to figure out my position.
My big concern now is… Will this be the case whenever I go on holiday? Slightly troublesome when you plan travelling with data roaming off…
I’ll do some other tests and report here the updates.
Daniweb reports that an online retailer went online with pre-order pricing of TomTom and car mount. Roughly the price of TomTom stand-alone units you could buy now.
But, do you want to compare having to use a separate device with taking out of your pocket your shiny iPhone 3Gs and driving wherever you want?
No comparison.
