A double post. We read in the press that VoxMobile will no longer be. By next week it will be rebranded into Orange. What this change will bring to consumer, no one knows, only time will tell (or their press conference due next week). But I guess the worldwide Orange know-how will stir the small luxembourgish market up a bit and maybe become a serious challenger to other providers.
Another news is that the new Yellow.lu app 2.0 we announced last week didn’t have any troubles passing the Appstore approval process… It’s yours for the takin’ as we speak. I had a (quick) look at it and it felt snappier, but I will go through it a bit longer and we’ll give you an indeep review soon.
One obvious change is, that offers more services besides being a directory. Like traffic cams view, farmacies, an “around me” feature and many more. An obvious hit at their competitor Editus, but in a less “childish” way with a more polished user-interface (less standard iPhone programing, for people familiar with the sdk and x-code, cocoa and the likings). What are your thoughts? Do you like it better? Is it worse? Comments below please.

I quote Geohot’s latest tweet: “black is the new purple”…

Some reading between the lines means that a jailbreak to jailbreak’em all is imminent. Rumors say even by tomorrow. So for all of you out there that went “snap, I upgraded to 3.1 by mistake”, there is still some hope.

This is just a concept homescreen….but damned I wish it will eventually  show-up (even in cydia)

From the authors, teehan + lax:

“Here’s how we might design a new home screen. […] You can see from the screens it’s essentially just a scrollable list of applications and notifications. […] A scrollable screen of the stuff that matters to me. […] Application preferences would allow users to include certain feeds on their home screens.”

3.1 jailbreak is taking a bit longer but, apparently the Dev-Team is close to release their hack. They found a way that wont need any DFU mode and obviously as easy as redsn0w. So after all the Purplera1ns and Redsn0ws and Yellowsn0ws meet Greenpo1son. I’m sure eager to poison my baby.

Last night I was out for dinner (Schluegthaus in Bridel, excellent place btw) with some friends and we started wondering: where the f… is the Dropbox app we are so eager to put our fingers on? I mean the app has been sent to the appstore simultanously with the Facebook app, and Facebook already has had 2 updates in the mean time, yet, no news about our dropdox :-/

So we started speculating why would Apple take longer to approve such an app and we came to some conclusions:
First thing that came to my mind is the fact that people could share illegal and/or rated stuff via the app, but then my friend replied: Well, my iDisk is full of porn, shouldn’t the app be rated NC-17 or rejected? (I laught a lot)
After I recovered, I realised something he said wasn’t that wrong: MobileMe and its iDisk. Maybe the fact that Dropbox is a way better version of the iDisk could be the reason why Apple feels threathend by it.

I admit they might be right… I was close to not renew my MobileMe subscription this year because the only thing I used it for was the iDisk and the find my iPhone feature. What do you think? what does Dropbox have to say about this? comments?

Apparently there is no mention on Apple’s site of Tango being an official reseller. So either Apple didn’t update their site yet (the deal has been announced officially 3 weeks ago, so they had plenty of time) or Tango is bluffing.
Tango2

Some comments of yours mentioned the fact that Tango still has no EDGE. When 3G isn’t available it hands over to GPRS. Knowing that many power-users like myself have their 3G turned off in order to preserve battery-life and make it through the day, we do rely on EDGE in order to reach at least 220kb/s rather then the 56kb/s that GPRS can offer.

Not having EDGE is a total deal-breaker for me.

Reuters reports that a spokesperson from the European Union’s consumer safety division has stated that Apple is investigating the incidents where users have alleged that their iPhones exploded.

Apple believes these incidents are ‘isolated’ but will carry out tests to identify the root cause of the problem.

There have been few cases where iPhone or an iPod Touch had allegedly exploded:

* Guardian had reported about an incident in France where a teenager’s claimed that his girlfriend’s iPhone began making a hissing sound before the screen suddenly shattered, sending broken pieces of glass “flying in the air”.
* Folks at Geekologie had reported that a Dutch guy had claimed that his iPhone had exploded and burnt the seat in his car.
* Times had reported of an incident where a second generation iPod Touch exploded, set a person’s pants on fire, and caused second-degree burns.

This also comes close on the heels of another report, which claimed that Apple had offered a refund to a British family for an iPod Touch that had allegedly exploded only if they agreed to keep quiet about the incident.

Helen Kearns, spokeswoman from the European Union’s consumer safety division has stated:

“What they’ve said to us is that they consider these are isolated incidents,”

“They don’t consider that there’s a general problem.”

Apple has issued the following statement:

“We are aware of these reports and we are waiting to receive the iPhones from the customers. Until we have the full details, we don’t have anything further to add.”

Though the cases reported might sound a little scary, Apple has sold more than 40 million iPhones and iPod Touches and so far only few cases have been reported, so frankly I’m not worried.

How about you?

Well, no? it’s just some tuning done here in Luxembourg. I bought the back-cover a while ago from an australian retailer. You can find pretty much any spare OEM parts on the internet. My friend Ovi had some hardware issues with his iPhone and rather then sending it in, he descided he rather voids the warranty and fixes his problems on his own. As far as I can say, he did a pretty good job, not perfect, since the quality doesn’t match the original, but very close and exclusive.

So if you ruined an iPhone yourself and have no warranty on the device or the warranty doesn’t cover the damages. Send us an email and we’ll see what we can do ;-)

The rumor mill is churning yet again — the latest Apple rumor is that an event is coming on September 9th. Multiple sources are saying that they’ve heard Apple will host an event in San Francisco to talk about music, including upgrades for the iPod and iTunes. This is hardly a surprise — Apple usually holds an event this time of year to pump up back-to-school sales of expected iPod refreshes. So while of course it’s a rumor until we hear it from Cupertino, it’s pretty believable that sometime around September we’ll be hearing about new iPods of some kind.

It’s also pretty believable that this event won’t be about the rumored iTablet. While mockups, leaks, and fake shots (oh my) seem to be appearing more and more often lately, the same folks that are saying September 9th are also saying that Apple isn’t planning to tell us anything about a tablet quite yet. That doesn’t mean that it’s not coming, of course (eventually — keep hope alive!), but definitely don’t hold your breath for a September announcement or a holiday release. Looks like we’ll find out whether those iPod camera rumors are true soon, but we’ll probably have to keep waiting for the tablet.
