Just a quick post to notify whoever doesn’t check the Appstore at least 4 times a day (for updates or new apps) that a new version of Dropbox (what a good service this is!) has been posted to the Appstore yesterday.

This update is meant to fix a few things, most notably, the compatibility with OS 3.0. Lot of people didn’t upgrade to 3.1 either because of the know “random shutdowns” or because no jailbreak was available, those same people couldn’t use Dropbox on their iPhone as the application simply would not run on an iPhone running an OS lower than 3.1

We could argue the speed of the approval process as this update came out AFTER 3.1.2 was released and a JB being available, still, always good to see updates flowing in.

My recommendation? Signup with Dropbox (using this link we’ll get a bit more space each) and install the iPhone app right away. Personally love it!

…And I’m giving it a shot as we speak…This is a Jailbreak only version, no unlock. If you own a locked phone then this is tabu for you. If you already updated to 3.1 or 3.1.2 then your baseband has been updated too. If your phone has been bought here in Luxembourg, there are no risks, they are all unlocked already. On the other hand if your phone is a US import, then Blackra1n will turn your iPhone 3Gs 32Gb into an expensive iPod Touch ;-) (hope this answered your question Iomad)

Jailbreakers beware. Apple released iPhone firmware update 3.1.2 that resolves the unwanted shutdowns and reboots issues. The dev-team warns that their jailbreaking tools are not yet compatible with the new firmware.

I quote Geohot’s latest tweet: “black is the new purple”…

Some reading between the lines means that a jailbreak to jailbreak’em all is imminent. Rumors say even by tomorrow. So for all of you out there that went “snap, I upgraded to 3.1 by mistake”, there is still some hope.

3Gs Jailbreak for 3.1 released by the Dev-team, but beware: only works on Mac OS X; will only work on previously jailbroken 3.0 or 3.0.1 iPhones. Don’t expect a preinstalled out-of-the-box 3.1 to be jailbreakable. Read carfully all the conditons in order to avoid irreversible damages to your device. Use at your own risk.
My personal opinion: if you have a perfectly running jailbroken iPhone 3.0.1 and are not missing on apps that require 3.1. to run (dropbox will upgrade to be backward compatible), keep it that way and wait for the next update that fixes the random shutdowns and frozen screen issues

This is just a concept homescreen….but damned I wish it will eventually  show-up (even in cydia)

From the authors, teehan + lax:

“Here’s how we might design a new home screen. […] You can see from the screens it’s essentially just a scrollable list of applications and notifications. […] A scrollable screen of the stuff that matters to me. […] Application preferences would allow users to include certain feeds on their home screens.”

Snapture iPhone camera app

Snapture – the camera app that is by far way better than the built-in camera app – has hit the App Store today, just as promised by the developers.  This is an old jailbreak favorite of mine .

The Dev-Team has finally unleashed the power of their jailbreaking an unlocking galore. Unfortunately the hack doesn’t work with the iPhone 3Gs nor the 3rd gen iPod Touch (yet). But since 3.1 is an epic fail I guess I will just skip this version and wait for the 3.1.1 (or something) where the random shutdowns, memory leeks and the battery lifetime issues get resolved (I hope)

3.1 jailbreak is taking a bit longer but, apparently the Dev-Team is close to release their hack. They found a way that wont need any DFU mode and obviously as easy as redsn0w. So after all the Purplera1ns and Redsn0ws and Yellowsn0ws meet Greenpo1son. I’m sure eager to poison my baby.

Sure, Apple’s iPhone OS 3.1 includes a couple of new goodies like iTunes-based App management, but if you like your Jailbroken or Unlocked iPhone, sit tight until Dev-Team gives the all clear. You could otherwise lose your unlock for good.

iPhone 3.1

“If you update to Apple’s new software using the normal iTunes process, you will lose your ultrasn0w unlock. In fact you may lose it permanently, because for most people the

baseband firmware cannot be reverted to a previous version (unlike the main application CPU firmware).

But don’t worry…our PwnageTool program lets you update your main firmware without touching your baseband firmware, so you can still have the best of both worlds.”

From all reports, you can still update to (and sync with) iTunes 9, but just be sure to hit “no” when pestered to update your firmware…for now at least.
